Clay review 2026: what it does and how actions and data credits are counted

Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026, refreshed every 30 days. Wanna in this list is our product, so read its row with that in mind. Prices change, so open each link before you decide.

Short answer. Clay is a spreadsheet-style tool where you pull lead data from many providers, enrich it and run research agents on each row. It fits a team with someone to build and own the tables. It meters actions and data credits separately, and its pricing page disagrees with itself in places.

How we chose what to look at

  • What Clay says on its home page and the pricing page linked from it, read on 17 Oct 2026. The pricing page carries no date.
  • One outside review, with its date: MarketBetter, published 16 Feb 2026 and modified 5 Jun 2026. MarketBetter sells a competing product, so it is not neutral, and it quotes old plan names, so we use it only for how credits get spent.
  • We did not run Clay ourselves. This is the biggest limit of this page.

What Clay does

Clay's home page says "Build systems to grow revenue" and describes infrastructure to get data, run agentic workflows and launch go-to-market plays. It claims more than 500,000 teams and 200+ data and AI vendors through one contract. We have not checked these claims.

How actions and data credits are counted

Actions are the steps a workflow takes, and Clay's FAQ says they "reset each billing cycle and don't roll over." Data credits pay for data bought from vendors. On Launch and Growth, top-ups cost a 30% premium, and the FAQ says unused data credits can build up to twice your monthly amount.

The page is inconsistent. The Launch header shows $167/month while the FAQ says "starting at $185," and Growth shows $446/month against $495/month. Each pair adds up as the lowest actions tier plus the lowest data-credit tier, annual and monthly. The table and the FAQ also describe data-credit rollover differently.

What reviewers say goes wrong

MarketBetter quotes a G2 reviewer saying costs "can spiral" with the enrichment steps each row goes through, and estimates $0.15 to $1.12 per lead before outreach. Its publisher is a rival. It quotes a TrustRadius reviewer: "It took our team about 2-3 weeks to really get comfortable building workflows."

Where it fits a small team

Use Clay when lead data is the problem and one person will own the tables. Start on Free, enrich one list of 100 rows and read how many actions and credits it used before moving up.

If your problem is "what should my company do this week," that is the job Wanna is built for. See AI lead generation tools, AI cold email tools and our reviews of Artisan and Sintra.

What Clay does not replace

Clay does not replace a person who decides who to sell to and what to say, or a CRM that holds your customers. Wanna does not replace those either, and it does not replace Clay for building lead tables.

FAQ

Is Clay worth it for a small business? It can be, with a clear list to build and one owner. Try the Free plan first.

How much is Clay? Clay's pricing page listed Free, Launch, Growth and a custom Enterprise plan on 17 Oct 2026. The table above has the figures we read, and the page is inconsistent, so check it on the day you buy.

Does Clay have a free plan? Yes on 17 Oct 2026: 500 actions and 100 data credits a month, up to 200 rows per table.

What happens when Clay credits run out? Per Clay's FAQ, actions do not roll over and you can move up an actions tier. Data credits can be topped up at a 30% premium.

Can Clay run my company for me? Not on this evidence. It enriches and routes lead data you set up; we found no source showing it decides what a company should do next.
