What is agentic AI?
Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product and is built on this idea; we say what it does and does not do below. Quotes were read on the sources' own pages on 17 Oct 2026. We did not run the other products.
Short answer. Agentic AI is AI set up to pursue a goal across several steps with limited supervision, instead of answering one prompt and stopping. IBM defines it as "an artificial intelligence system that can accomplish a specific goal with limited supervision." It is a way of building software, not a product you can buy by that name, and the label is used loosely.
Two definitions that agree
- IBM. Agentic AI is "an artificial intelligence system that can accomplish a specific goal with limited supervision." The same page says that "while generative models focus on creating content based on learned patterns, agentic AI extends this capability by applying generative outputs toward specific goals" (IBM).
- Anthropic. In its guide to building agents, "workflows are systems where LLMs and tools are orchestrated through predefined code paths," while "agents, on the other hand, are systems where LLMs dynamically direct their own processes and tool usage" (Anthropic).
The difference that matters in practice is who picks the next step. In a workflow, a person wrote the path in advance. In an agentic system, the AI chooses it while it runs.
How it compares
| Generative AI | Workflow or automation | Agentic AI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Produces text, images or code from a prompt | Runs steps a person defined in advance | Pursues a goal and picks its own steps |
| Who chooses the next step | You, with each prompt | The path written beforehand | The AI, while it runs |
| What you supervise | Each output | The setup | The goal, the limits and what leaves the company |
The table is our summary of the two definitions above, not a vendor's table.
The trade-off the builders name
Anthropic's guide says "agentic systems often trade latency and cost for better task performance," and tells builders to consider "when this tradeoff makes sense." In plain terms, letting the AI choose its own steps can do harder jobs, and it can cost more and take longer than a fixed path. If a job always goes the same way, a fixed workflow is the simpler tool.
Agentic AI and an autonomous company
An autonomous company is the far end of the idea: agentic AI doing the day-to-day running of a business. Nothing we read shows that outcome is common. If you want the limits of that idea for a company, read the limits of an autonomous company, and for the choice between asking first and running on its own, approve everything or autonomous.
Pros and minuses
- Plus. One goal in, several steps done, without you starting each one.
- Minus. More freedom for the AI means more to supervise. The cost of a wrong step grows with what the AI is allowed to touch.
- Minus. The word is a marketing label as much as a category, so ask a vendor which steps the AI picks on its own and which wait for you.
Where Wanna fits
Wanna uses this idea for the management of a small company. Its how-it-works page says "It decides what to do next, gives the work to a team of AI agents," and that "posts, applications and ads wait for your OK in either mode" (how it works, read 17 Oct 2026). In Autonomous mode it "asks you only about what is critical: money, anomalies, risky steps." Minuses: Wanna is early. When we read its live page at 15:07 UTC on 17 Oct 2026 it showed 3 companies, 4 tasks done in the last 24 hours and 0 paying companies. Its trust page says there is no security audit report (such as SOC 2) yet. It does not write or ship your code.
What agentic AI does not replace
- Your decision about what the company is for. The AI works toward a goal; someone has to set it.
- Approval of anything that leaves the company. Letters, posts and payments are where a wrong step costs most.
- A licensed professional. Legal, tax and medical advice stay with people who can be held to it.
FAQ
What is agentic AI in simple terms? AI that works toward a goal over several steps with limited supervision, instead of answering one prompt and stopping.
What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI? Generative AI produces content from a prompt. IBM says agentic AI applies generative output toward specific goals. The two overlap rather than compete.
What is the difference between agentic AI and an AI agent? IBM describes agentic AI as consisting of AI agents. An agent is the part that acts, and agentic AI is the system or approach. See AI agent vs chatbot.
Is agentic AI safe for a small business? It depends on what it may do without your OK. Ask what it can send, spend or change, and how you stop it. Anthropic's guide itself names cost and latency as trade-offs.
Does a small business need agentic AI? Only for jobs where the steps are not known in advance. For a job that goes the same way every time, a fixed workflow is simpler.
