AI agent vs chatbot, what is the difference?
Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product; it is an agent-based product, so we say below where that colors this page. Every quote was read on the linked page on 17 Oct 2026. We did not run the products named here.
Short answer. A chatbot is built to converse: you ask, it answers. An AI agent is built to act: it is given a goal, uses tools, and decides some of its own next steps. The line is not sharp, and products blur it. The useful question is not what the product is called but who decides the next step, and what happens before anything leaves your company.
How the line is drawn
- Chatbot. Wikipedia defines it as software "designed to converse through text or speech" (Wikipedia). Its output is a reply.
- Workflow. Anthropic, in a post of 19 Dec 2024, writes that "Workflows are systems where LLMs and tools are orchestrated through predefined code paths" (Anthropic). A person decided the steps in advance.
- Agent. The same post says "Agents, on the other hand, are systems where LLMs dynamically direct their own processes and tool usage" (Anthropic). The model decides the steps.
Vendors also use the word in a looser, commercial sense. Lindy's home page calls it "your AI teammate that plugs into your tools, learns how you work, and takes real work off your plate" (Lindy). That is a description of a job, not a technical test.
Side by side
| Chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the next step | You, with each message | The model, within a goal you set |
| What it produces | A reply you read | An action in a tool, or a draft of one |
| Plus | Simple to start; you see every answer before anything happens | Can take open-ended work off your plate |
| Minus | Does nothing on its own; you copy the answer where it is needed | Anthropic: "The autonomous nature of agents means higher costs, and the potential for compounding errors" |
| What to check | Whether the answer is right | What it may do without your OK, and how you stop it |
The table's descriptions follow the definitions above. It is our summary, not a measurement.
What an agent costs you
Anthropic writes that "Agentic systems often trade latency and cost for better task performance" (Anthropic). It says agents "can be used for open-ended problems where it's difficult or impossible to predict the required number of steps."
A real example of the minus: in Anthropic's Project Vend of June 2025, Claude ran a small office shop. Anthropic listed failures including "Selling at a loss" and "Getting talked into discounts," and wrote "we would not hire Claudius" (Project Vend). One shop and one model version tell us about that run, not about every agent.
Where Wanna sits
Wanna is on the agent side, with limits it states itself. Its how-it-works page describes it as something that "decides what to do next" and "gives the work to a team of AI agents." In Approve everything mode it "prepares every letter, application and post and waits for your OK on each one" (how it works, read 17 Oct 2026). Its trust page says sending is off for every new company (trust).
Minuses: it is early. The how-it-works page counted 4 tasks finished in the last 24 hours, for 3 companies, when we read it. Its trust page says there is no security audit report (such as SOC 2) yet. It does not ship your code or move your money.
What neither a chatbot nor an agent replaces
- A person who answers for the result. Neither one signs, pays or promises something to a customer on its own authority.
- A check on the first real task. Run one task you can verify before you give an agent a second.
- Expertise you cannot judge. A fluent answer from a chatbot can still be wrong, and an agent can act on it.
FAQ
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot? A chatbot converses and replies. An AI agent is given a goal, uses tools and decides some of its own steps. Anthropic puts it as models that "dynamically direct their own processes and tool usage."
Is ChatGPT a chatbot or an AI agent? It depends on the mode you use it in. In plain conversation it is a chatbot. When a product gives a model tools and lets it choose steps toward a goal, that part behaves as an agent. We did not test any specific product for this page.
Is an AI agent better than a chatbot? Not always. Anthropic says agents trade latency and cost for task performance and carry the risk of compounding errors. For a one-off question, a chatbot is simpler.
Do I need an AI agent for my small business? Only if you have repeated work where you can name the goal and check the result. Start with one task. See how to choose an AI that runs your company.
Where does an AI CEO fit? It plans the order of many tasks and hands each to an agent. See AI CEO vs AI co-founder vs AI agent and what is an AI co-founder.
