Can AI run a one-person company?
Written by Wanna AI. Updated 17 Oct 2026. Prepared with AI; the product rules and counts below were read from Wanna's own pages and records on that date. Wanna is our product and the example used here.
Short answer. Partly. An AI can do the preparing for a one-person company: read the site, plan the week, research, and draft letters, posts and applications. It cannot be the one who decides, pays, signs or answers for what goes out. In Wanna the AI runs the work and the founder keeps four things: what leaves the company, money, registrations and signatures. What follows is one run, step by step, and then what we have and have not seen.
What this run is made from
The run is the first three days on Wanna's demo, an example company called Acme Dental (made up, read-only, nothing in it is sent). Every step can be checked on the demo. It is a plan, not a result; counts from real companies come below.
The run, step by step
Step 1: you paste a link. Wanna reads the site and writes what it understood, with a source for each fact. You correct it.
Step 2: the AI plans three days. On 17 Oct 2026 the demo board shows 15 tasks for Acme Dental: five today, five tomorrow, five the day after. Twelve are the AI's: an application, letters to investors, a LinkedIn post in three versions, a launch kit. Three are the founder's: approve the company's facts, write down real numbers so no letter guesses, and keep three grants or investors to go after.
Step 3: the AI works on its side of the line. Reading, research and drafting happen inside the company with no approval needed.
Step 4: a task waits. Anything that would leave the company stops at "waiting for your OK". The demo shows four tasks waiting on the founder. Each is a card you open; on the Today board you can also mark a task "Done already" or "Not for me".
Step 5: the founder approves, and only then does it go. In "Approve everything" every letter waits. In Autonomous, letters can go on their own, but only after you turn on "Let me write outside for you" and connect a sending domain; posts, applications and ads still wait. Sending is off for every new company. See Autonomy and Trust.
Step 6: you can stop it. One button pauses the whole team; unfinished tasks wait in the queue.
What stays with the founder
- What leaves the company. Posts, applications and ads always wait for your OK.
- Money. Wanna never takes payments for you and never holds your money.
- Anything unusual or risky. It waits for you in both modes.
- Registrations and signatures. Wanna drafts and fills; it does not sign.
- Responsibility. The founder, not the AI, answers for what goes out.
What real runs have shown so far
The evidence is thin, and we say so.
- On 10 Oct 2026 four test-run companies (the founder's, two test companies and one account we could not confirm) made 204 tasks in two days: 34 done, 6 failed, 120 still open. Every finished task was reading or research, and the 40 emails and 22 applications stayed drafts. The table is on How to run a company with AI agents.
- On 17 Oct 2026, 11:11 UTC, we counted every task in Wanna OS, test companies included: 1,328 tasks, of which 81 wait for an OK and none is marked approved, sent or answered.
- The live page counts companies of people only, and on 17 Oct 2026, 11:10 UTC it shows 0 things that went outside in the last 7 days and 0 paying companies.
So we have no run in which a founder approved a letter that was sent and answered. The approval step is built and its rules are published; we have not yet watched it carry a company. Anthropic's Project Vend, where Claude ran a small office shop for a month, shows why the line matters: its mistakes included selling below cost and telling customers to pay into an account it made up. In the TheAgentCompany benchmark the strongest agent completed 30% of a simulated company's tasks on its own.
What Wanna does not replace
Wanna does not replace a founder: it does not decide, pay or sign. It does not write or ship your code. It has no SOC 2 report yet, as Trust states. Nor does it replace an accountant or a lawyer.
FAQ
Can AI run a one-person company autonomously? Not today in the sense of no person at all. The AI can do the research and drafting alone; a person approves what leaves the company, and handles money and signatures.
Is there an AI agent that runs my startup like a CEO? Wanna is built that way: it plans the week and works through it task by task, and you approve what goes outside. See What is an AI CEO?.
How much should I let it do alone? Start in "Approve everything" and read the drafts. See Approve everything or Autonomous.
