What is a one-person company?

Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product and is written about last, with its minuses. Figures were read on the linked pages on 17 Oct 2026.

Short answer. A one-person company is a business where the owner does the work and has no paid employees. It is not a legal form. The owner may operate it as a sole proprietorship or a single-member LLC, and may still hire freelancers or software. The term overlaps with what the US Census calls a nonemployer business, but the two are not the same.

What the numbers say

  • Nonemployer businesses. The US Census Bureau counted 29.8 million nonemployer businesses in 2022, "those with no paid employees and are subject to federal income tax" (Census Bureau). Its Nonemployer Statistics cover businesses with receipts of $1,000 or more, and the 2022 data was released on 12 Dec 2024 (release).
  • A caution on that count. A nonemployer business is not always a one-person company: it can have co-owners, and many are a side income. Use it as an upper bound on how many businesses have no staff, not as a count of full-time solo companies.
  • Solo-founded startups. Carta's Solo Founders Report 2025 says the share of new startups with a solo founder rose from about 23.7% in 2019 to 36.3% in the first half of 2025 (Carta). Carta's page did not load for our reader, so we took the figures as quoted in an article by the Keiretsu Forum. Those are startups on Carta, not all small businesses.
  • The funding gap. The same article quotes Carta: solo-led startups were roughly 35% of 2024 incorporations but about 17% of those that closed a venture round within the year.

How it is set up

The IRS says a single-member LLC is, for income tax, "treated as an entity disregarded as separate from its owner" unless it elects otherwise, and that an owner running a trade or business "is subject to the tax on net earnings from self employment in the same manner as a sole proprietorship" (IRS). The page also says such an LLC needs an EIN if it has any employees. So the entity can add staff later, and employment taxes then run under the LLC's own name and EIN. Which form fits is a question for an accountant.

Where AI fits, and where it has not been shown

A one-person company is limited by the owner's hours. AI products try to take tasks off those hours: drafting, research, follow-ups. Vendors such as Cofounder sell the idea directly, saying it "lets you run an entire company with AI," and say "nothing ships without your approval."

The evidence is thinner than the pitch. Anthropic's Project Vend had Claude run an office shop, and its write-up lists failures including "Selling at a loss" and "Getting talked into discounts" (Anthropic). We found no independent count of one-person companies that run mainly on AI.

Where Wanna fits

Wanna is built for a founder with a site and a small team or none. Its how-it-works page says it "decides what to do next" and "gives the work to a team of AI agents," with posts, applications and ads waiting for your OK in either mode (how it works, read 17 Oct 2026). Minuses: it is early, with 4 tasks finished in the last 24 hours for 3 companies when we read the page. Its trust page says no security audit report (such as SOC 2) yet (trust). It does not write or ship your code, and it does not move your money.

What AI does not replace in a one-person company

  • The owner's accountability. Contracts, taxes, customer promises and refunds stay with the person whose name is on the business.
  • A lawyer or accountant. The entity choice and tax filing above are professional questions.
  • Customers. Software can draft the message. Someone still has to be worth replying to.

FAQ

What is a one-person company? A business run by its owner with no paid employees. It is not a legal form; owners usually use a sole proprietorship or a single-member LLC.

How many one-person companies are there? There is no exact count. The US Census Bureau counted 29.8 million nonemployer businesses in 2022, which includes side businesses and some with co-owners, so it is an upper bound.

Is a one-person company the same as a solo founder startup? Not quite. A solo-founder startup is meant to grow and often raises money. Carta's data says solo-led startups raised money less often than they were founded.

Can AI run a one-person company? Parts of it. AI can draft and plan; the owner approves what leaves the company. See what is an AI agent vs a chatbot and what is an AI co-founder.

Where do I start? Pick one repeated task, let an AI handle it, and check the result. See AI tools for solo founders.
