What is human-in-the-loop AI?
Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product, so read the Wanna section with that in mind. We read vendor pages and did not run the other products.
Short answer. Human-in-the-loop (HITL) means a person takes part in an AI workflow so that its output is checked before it counts. IBM defines it as "a system or process in which a human actively participates in the operation, supervision or decision-making of an automated system" (IBM). For an AI that does business work, the practical question is which actions wait for a person.
What each source says
- IBM. It says that in AI, HITL means humans are involved "at some point in the AI workflow to ensure accuracy, safety, accountability or ethical decision-making", and that the goal is to get the efficiency of automation "without sacrificing the precision, nuance and ethical reasoning of human oversight". It calls HITL "a safety net, especially in high-risk or regulated sectors like healthcare or finance". Minuses, listed on IBM's own page: "relying on humans can become a bottleneck", human work "can be slow and expensive", and humans "can be more biased and error prone" in some ways. Much of the page is about labeling training data, not about approving an AI's actions at work.
- LangChain. Its docs describe middleware that checks each tool call "against a configurable policy" and, if review is needed, pauses execution and waits (LangChain docs). A person can approve the action as proposed, edit it, reject it with feedback, or respond directly. Minuses: it is a developer feature you write code for; the docs say you must configure a checkpointer so the state survives the pause, and that production use needs a persistent one.
Both pages are a vendor describing its own approach. We found no independent test of either.
Where Wanna fits
Wanna builds the approval step into the product, with no code. You paste your site link and it plans the week and drafts the work (how it works). Its trust page says posts, applications and ads always wait for your OK, "Sending is off for every new company", and the Stop button always works (trust). You choose between Approve everything and Autonomous, and a letter goes out only after you turn on writing outside and connect a sending domain. Minuses: Autonomous lets more through without a look, so a mistake can reach people before you see it; there is no per-action editing rule like LangChain's policy; it is early, as the live page shows (measured 17 Oct 2026, 14:31 UTC: 3 companies of people, 0 paying, 0 things that went outside in the last 7 days); and the trust page says "No security audit report (such as SOC 2) yet". The two modes are explained in Approve everything or Autonomous.
What human-in-the-loop does not replace
- Your attention. A person who approves without reading adds a click, not a check. IBM's own list of human error applies to you too.
- Limits on what the AI may do at all. Approval comes after a draft exists. Some actions should not be drafted. See what an autonomous company can do today.
- Speed. Each approval is a wait. Decide which actions are worth the wait before you turn the loop on.
- A test on your own work. Run one real task and read what the AI proposed.
FAQ
What is human-in-the-loop AI? It is an AI workflow in which a person takes part, checking or approving the output. IBM defines it as a system where a human actively participates in operation, supervision or decision-making.
Which AI actions should wait for a person? Anything that leaves the company or cannot be undone: letters, posts, applications, ads and payments. Wanna holds posts, applications and ads for your OK in every mode.
Does human-in-the-loop make AI slower? Yes. IBM says relying on humans can become a bottleneck. The trade is speed for a check.
What can a person do when the AI asks for approval? In LangChain's design, approve, edit, reject with feedback, or respond directly. Wanna shows each step so you can approve or stop it.
Is Wanna human-in-the-loop? Yes, in both modes for posts, applications and ads. In Autonomous mode you allow more to go without a look, and sending stays off until you turn it on. See how Wanna works.
