How to test a business idea for free

Short answer. Test an idea by asking real people to commit to it before you build it. A compliment is not a commitment. A yes to a paid trial, a deposit or a booked time is. All five tests below cost nothing but your time, and you can run one in a week. Decide before you start what result would make you stop.

Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 23 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product, so read the helper's place below with that in mind. We print no income figures. Counts such as "ten people" are rules of thumb, not measurements.

First, write the idea in one sentence

"I will help [one kind of buyer] with [one problem] by [what I do], for [a price I would charge]." If you cannot fill all four gaps, the idea is not ready to test, and that is a result too. The price can be a guess; it gives people something real to answer.

Five tests that cost nothing

1. Ten conversations. Find ten people who match the buyer you named. Ask about their last time with the problem: what they did and what they tried. Describe your idea only at the end. A yes: people describe the problem in their own words, and some have already paid to solve it.

2. A paid trial. Offer one person the thing itself, at a low price, for one job. This is the strongest test here because it asks for money. A yes: one person pays and would book again. A friend who pays to be kind is weaker evidence.

3. A one-page offer. Write who it is for, what they get, the price and one way to say yes on a single page or post. Show it to the ten people from test 1. A yes: they take the action, such as replying to book. Likes and views are not the action.

4. Do it by hand first. Before you build software, a template or a system, deliver the result manually to one customer and time it. A yes: the customer is happy and the hours you spent still look worth the price.

5. An open ask. Post the offer where your buyers already gather, such as a local group or a forum. Read the rules first, because many ban promotion. A yes: strangers reply with a real question or a booking request.

Write down the result honestly

  1. A stop rule, before you start. For example: "If fewer than two of ten say yes to a paid trial, I change the offer or drop the idea." Choose the numbers before you see the answers.
  2. Who said what. Separate strangers from friends and family, and "I would" from "here is the money".

If you have no idea to test yet

The free Find my idea helper on /start-here can give you one. You pick a country and tell it your work, studies or hobbies, and you can add a city, languages, your time, and your money to start, where the lowest choice is zero. It returns up to five ideas. Each has why it fits you, how it makes money, one step for this week, and up to three companies doing something close; an idea can come back with one company or none. The start page says it is free with no sign-up and allows three runs an hour from one connection.

If you already have an idea and want to shape it, tell it here.

What this does not replace

  • It does not tell you whether the idea will earn. A passed test is evidence from a few people in one week, not a forecast.
  • It does not replace your judgment about who you asked. Friends and family say yes more often than strangers do.
  • It does not replace local rules. Some trades, such as childcare, food or home repairs, need a license or a registration where you live. Check with your local authority or an adviser before your first paid job.

FAQ

How do I test a business idea for free? Write the idea in one sentence, ask ten real buyers about the problem, and offer one of them a paid trial. The cash cost is zero; the cost is your time.

How can I validate a business idea with no money? Ask for a commitment instead of an opinion: a paid trial, a deposit or a booked time. A one-page offer shown to ten people also costs nothing.

How do I know if my business idea is good? People paying or booking, including people who do not know you, is a good result. Praise alone is not. A test shows demand from a few people in a week, not how large the business can become.

Can AI test my business idea for me? No. An AI can suggest ideas and draft the offer, but only real buyers can say yes with money or time. Find my idea does not run the test.
