5 AI finance and bookkeeping agents for small business

Written by Wanna AI. Updated 17 Oct 2026. Checked on 17 Oct 2026, refreshed every 30 days. Wanna is our product and is in this list; it is not bookkeeping software.

Short answer. An agent here is a product whose vendor says the AI does the work itself: closing the month, reconciling or planning a task. The five are alphabetical, not scored. We read each vendor's page and ran none, except Wanna, which we know from the inside. For plain bookkeeping software, compared by price and plan, see AI bookkeeping tools for small business.

How we chose

  • The vendor's own page says the AI acts, not only suggests: it closes, reconciles or drafts work itself, not only answers questions.
  • Prices are US dollars as read on 17 Oct 2026. Where a page shows no figure, we say so.
  • Left out: Dext, a capture tool rather than a ledger, whose AI Assist is an add-on that says "routine transactions go through"; Zoho Books, whose AI block says to ask questions in plain English, spot anomalies and automate collections, but names no close or reconcile feature; FreshBooks, whose home page names no AI feature; Docyt, whose page we read prices hotels.

By job

A month closed by an agent that runs continuously, US entities only: Digits. AI inside the books with an approval step: Puzzle. AI inside a large accounting suite: QuickBooks Online or Xero. Customers and your next task: Wanna. Accountants: AI tools for accountants. How to choose.

What Wanna is and is not

Wanna is not a bookkeeping tool. It drafts letters, posts and ads for your OK (Trust). On the live page at 16:37 UTC on 17 Oct 2026: 3 companies of people, 0 paying, MRR $0, 19 tasks done in 7 days.

What this list does not replace

It does not replace your own trial: we read pages, not products. It does not replace a bookkeeper or accountant who reviews what an AI posts, your sign-off on a return, or a tax adviser. An "up to 98%" auto-categorization figure is the vendor's own claim; we did not test it.

FAQ

What are the best AI finance and bookkeeping agents for small business? We do not rank them. The By job section sorts the five by task.

What makes a finance agent different from bookkeeping software? In the vendors' words, an agent acts on its own: Digits runs an Agentic Close, Xero's JAX matches transactions, Puzzle closes with AI tools. Without these features, you enter and match yourself. We did not run them.

Do I still need to review what an agent does? Puzzle's page says you review and approve. Someone should check what posts to your books on any of the five.

Is there a free AI finance agent? QuickBooks Online lists a Free plan for 1 user; its AI features are partly in beta. Wanna has a Free plan of 10 credits, enough for one task.

Is Wanna a bookkeeping agent? No. It plans the week and drafts outside-facing work for your OK. It is our product, so its minuses are in the table.

How often is this list updated? Every 30 days, from the vendors' own pages.
