Wanna / Can AI replace my bookkeeper or accountant?
Can AI replace my bookkeeper or accountant?
Short answer. Partly for a bookkeeper, and the sources we read do not say so for an accountant. Software already matches and categorizes bank transactions, but the vendor we read says a person keeps control, and the IRS says you remain responsible for a tax return whoever prepares it.
Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. We read the pages below that day and quote them. Wanna is not a bookkeeping or tax product, and we did not test any accounting tool.
What the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says
- Bookkeeping clerks. "The median annual wage for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks was $50,670 in May 2025." It also says "Employment of bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks is projected to decline 6 percent from 2025 to 2035", and "Software innovations have automated many of the tasks performed by bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks." (BLS)
- Accountants and auditors. "The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025." and "Employment of accountants and auditors is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035". The page says some routine accounting tasks may be automated, and that this is not expected to reduce overall demand for accountants. (BLS)
Read together: the agency projects fewer bookkeeping clerks and more accountants. That is a projection of jobs, not a test of what AI does for one company.
What an accounting vendor says its AI does
Intuit's page for advisors says of its QuickBooks Accounting Agent: "The Agent matches bank transactions and suggests categories". Asked whether it posts transactions automatically, the page answers: "No. A core principle of the Accounting Agent is keeping you in control." On whether it replaces accountants, it says: "Not at all. The Agent is a powerful tool that helps automate routine tasks, saving you time and improving accuracy." (Intuit)
That is a vendor describing its own product. We have not checked how often its suggestions are right.
What the IRS says about taxes
The IRS says: "Anyone can be a paid tax return preparer as long as they have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)." (IRS, Choosing a tax professional) Its Topic 254 page adds that a paid preparer "is required to sign the return and include their preparer tax identification number (PTIN) on it", and that "you're ultimately accountable for the accuracy of every item reported on your return." (IRS Topic 254)
Software does not sign a return or hold a PTIN, so a person must still be in that chain.
A split that fits the sources
- Routine and repeatable: matching bank lines, suggesting categories, flagging odd entries. Tools do this today, and a person reviews it.
- Judgment and sign-off: tax positions, filing, answering the IRS, deciding what a number means for your next hire. These stay with a person.
If you try an AI tool, make it suggest, not post, and keep someone who can say no.
Where Wanna fits
Wanna is not a bookkeeping tool. On the pages we read, it plans a founder's week and prepares letters, posts, applications and research cards, and in Approve everything mode anything that leaves the company waits for your OK. In Autonomous mode, once you turn sending on, first letters to people already in your Outreach can go on their own. It is an early product: the About page, counted 2026-10-17, shows 2 confirmed sign-ups and 0 paying customers. See what an AI CEO is and is not and how much control to give it.
What AI does not replace here
- A paid preparer's signature. If you pay someone to prepare the return, the IRS requires them to sign it and add their PTIN.
- Your responsibility. The IRS says you remain accountable for the return.
- A review of the books. The vendor page above says its agent does not post on its own.
FAQ
Can AI replace my bookkeeper? It can take over parts of the work, such as matching and categorizing bank transactions, and BLS projects 6 percent fewer bookkeeping clerks from 2025 to 2035. The vendor we read says a person approves before anything posts.
Can AI replace my accountant? The sources we read do not say so. BLS projects 5 percent growth for accountants and auditors, and says automating routine tasks is not expected to reduce overall demand.
Can AI replace my CPA for taxes? No source we read says so. A paid preparer must sign and include a PTIN, and the IRS says you are accountable for the return.
What can AI do in bookkeeping today? According to Intuit's page, match bank transactions and suggest categories, with the person staying in control.
Does Wanna do bookkeeping? No. See AI CEO vs hiring an operations manager for what it does cover.
