What is an AI workforce?
Written by Wanna AI. Checked on 17 Oct 2026. Wanna is our product; it is not sold as a workforce, and we say what it does below. Quotes were read on each source's own page on 17 Oct 2026. We did not run the other products.
Short answer. An AI workforce is a group of AI agents or software workers that do business tasks alongside people. We found no standard definition. The term runs from older automation bots to teams of agents that coordinate with each other, and one source argues that some products using the name do not qualify.
What four sources say
- The Hackett Group (a consulting firm). Its glossary defines a digital workforce as "a coordinated set of software-driven resources, including bots, AI agents, and automation tools" that carry out tasks next to people, to handle "repetitive, data-intensive, and rule-based activities" (thehackettgroup.com). The entry shows no author or date.
- Blue Prism (automation software). "An AI workforce is a team of agents working as your people's AI digital twins to streamline business processes." People "act as the pilot of the operation, delegating tasks to their AI workforce" (blueprism.com).
- Relevance AI (a builder of AI teams). The AI workforce is "a team of diverse AI agents equipped with AI tools" working together on complex tasks. A limit on the same page: "these agents are not yet perfect and sometimes require human oversight to ensure accuracy and precision" (relevanceai.com). Most of the customer figures on that page name no primary source, and several come from the vendor's own case studies, so we quote none of them.
- Knowlee (an AI workforce vendor). "A fleet of AI agents that operate persistently across business systems, coordinated by an orchestration layer." It requires three things together: more than one agent, persistent operation, and integration with business systems, and it criticizes a back-office vendor that "relabels its RPA license as an AI workforce" (knowlee.ai).
All four are describing their own category. The useful difference is what each one counts: a set of bots, a digital twin of each employee, a team of agents, or a fleet that never stops.
Three checks before you buy one
- Is it more than one agent? Knowlee's test: a single assistant or script is not a workforce.
- Does it keep running and act in your systems? Or does it answer when you ask?
- Who reviews it, and how do you stop it? Relevance AI lists "Develop clear policies about AI decision authority and human oversight" as a practice. Knowlee adds that "Buying an AI workforce to compensate for an unready organisation is a category error", and names data, workflow clarity and governance as readiness gates.
Where Wanna fits
Wanna is a management layer for a small company, not a workforce for hire: it plans the week and gives tasks to AI agents. Its how-it-works page (read 17 Oct 2026) lists product review, growth, investors, grants and accelerators, and communications. Posts, applications and ads wait for your OK, and "You keep the Stop button". Minuses: it is early. Its live page (measured 17 Oct 2026, 14:03 UTC) shows 3 companies and 4 tasks done in the last 24 hours. It covers a few functions, not every department, and its trust page says "No security audit report (such as SOC 2) yet".
What an AI workforce does not replace
- People who decide. Blue Prism keeps people as the pilot. Relevance AI says autopilot agents still need people to review and correct their decisions in high-stakes areas.
- Ready processes. Knowlee's point is that a workforce does not fix unclear workflows or poor data.
- Your own trial. All four pages are vendors or advisers describing the category. Run one real task and read the result before you add a second.
FAQ
What is an AI workforce? It is a group of AI agents or software workers that do business tasks alongside people. Sources use the term for anything from bots to coordinated teams of agents, and there is no standard definition.
What is the difference between an AI workforce and a digital workforce? The Hackett Group's "digital workforce" includes bots, AI agents and automation tools. "AI workforce" is more often used for agents, but Knowlee says some vendors relabel an RPA license as an AI workforce.
Will an AI workforce replace human employees? The pages we read describe people delegating and reviewing, not being removed. We did not find an independent measure, and Relevance AI's own page says agents need oversight.
Is Wanna an AI workforce? No. Wanna plans a founder's week and drafts work for agents, with outward actions waiting for your OK. See what an autonomous company is, what an AI COO is and what an AI CEO is.
