Short answer. Think of autonomy in five levels. At level 1 you ask AI for help. At level 2 it does tasks you assign. At level 3 it plans the week and you approve everything. At level 4 routine work runs alone and you approve what is risky. At level 5 it runs the business and you check exceptions. Most small businesses in 2026 can reach level 3 or 4. Level 5 is not reached by anyone we know of.

The five levels

LevelNameWhat AI doesWhat the owner does
1HelperAnswers when you askAll the work, with AI's help
2AssistantDoes tasks you give itDecides what to do, checks results
3PlannerPlans the week and does the tasks, all waiting for OKApproves everything
4OperatorRuns routine on its own, asks about risk and moneyApproves the risky part, reads a weekly report
5AutonomousRuns the business inside set limitsChecks exceptions, owns money and law

Where businesses are

One AI builder's blog grades companies on a similar L1 to L5 scale and writes: "The honest 2026 reality: most companies marketed as 'autonomous' sit at L2 or L3." A research benchmark found the strongest AI agent tested completed 30% of a simulated company's tasks alone. Both are quoted with links on what is an autonomous company. For a small business, level 4 for office routine is a realistic goal; level 5 is not yet.

How Wanna maps to the levels

Wanna's default mode is level 3: it suggests the next step, you approve, it does the work. Its fully autonomous mode, set up by hand for each company through sales, is close to level 4: it acts inside limits agreed first, and anything that spends money still waits for your OK (pricing, read 25 Oct 2026). See approve everything or autonomous.

How to move up a level

  • 1 to 2: give AI one recurring task instead of one-off questions.
  • 2 to 3: let it propose the week's plan.
  • 3 to 4: turn off approval for one kind of task that has been right for several weeks.
  • 4 to 5: not advised yet for anything that touches money or clients.

FAQ

How autonomous can a small business be? Its office routine can run largely on its own, at what we call level 4. Money and legal responsibility stay with the owner.

What level should I aim for? Level 3 first, then level 4 for the tasks that have proven reliable.

Is level 5 possible? Not reliably in 2026, on the evidence we read.

What is the difference between level 3 and 4? At 3 you approve everything; at 4 you approve only what is risky or spends money.
